7 KEY facts about card payments in the UK that you NEED to know…


  1. There were 70 contactless transactions per minute in the UK at the end of 2012, by March this had reached 120, and is predicted to reach 300 by the end of 2013;
  2. debit cards were used to make 50% of the VALUE of UK retail sales in 2012;
  3. 73% of all retail spending that takes place on the UK High Street is made using cards;
  4. Over a million UK businesses now accept plastic cards.  This number has increased by 64% over the last 10 years;
  5. 91% of the UK adult population have a debit card;
  6. the volume of online debit card transactions in the UK are almost 1.5 times the volume of credit card transactions, at 542 million transactions compared to 388 million;
  7. the VALUE of online DEBIT card spending also eclipsed the VALUE of online CREDIT card spending for the first time in the UK in 2012, at £35bn vs £34bn.
